Steel siding is a popular choice for homeowners due to being beautiful, long-lasting and low-maintenance. Even though it can last for multiple decades, it still requires a yearly cleaning to extend its lifespan. Luckily, steel siding is easy to clean and requires minimal effort to rid it of seasonal dirt and grime.

1. Prepare Your Cleaning Materials

Steel Siding Cleaning Solutions

Most steel siding doesn’t need a cleaning solution and can be properly cleaned with water and a pressure washer. If you haven’t cleaned it in a few years, then you may want to consider using a cleaning solution.

Harsh chemicals can damage your steel siding, so it’s important to be cautious. You’ll also want to consider your surrounding plants and landscaping and use environmentally-friendly cleaning solutions.

Here are some plant-friendly options:

  • Laundry detergent: In a bucket mix one-third of a cup of laundry detergent and six gallons of water. Pour it into your pressure washer if you have one.
  • Oxygen bleach: If you see mold or mildew, mix one-part oxygen bleach with three parts water in a spray bottle. Spray it on any areas with mold, which will help slow its regrowth. This type of bleach is non-toxic and safe for your plants.

Brushes and Brooms

Always use soft nylon brushes or brooms that won’t scratch your paint or damage your siding. Consider using a brush with a removable handle that is long enough to reach the high spots of your siding.

Pressure Washer or Garden Hose

A pressure washer is ideal to clean steel siding and helps you clean the upper areas of your house. Always use it on the lowest setting so you don’t cause dents or damage to your siding. If you don’t have one, you can rent a pressure washer from your local tool rental service.

If you’re unable to get a pressure washer, you can still use a garden hose to give it a good rinse. You may need a step ladder to help you reach the upper areas of your siding.

2. Scrub Away Dirt & Dust

Take your soft-bristled brush or broom and dip it into a bucket of water or cleaning solution. Scrub from side to side and then up and down to properly break up any accumulated dust and dirt.

3. Apply Solution & Rinse

Pour your cleaning solution into your power washer or dip your nylon brush into a bucket to apply it to your siding. Wash your siding in sections and rinse immediately to prevent the solution from drying, which can eat at your paint and cause corrosion.

If you aren’t using a cleaning solution, you can go straight to rinsing your siding with water from your hose or pressure washer. When rinsing, start at the top and work your way down to prevent streaking.
