Is Wood or Composite Decking Best for You?

When the time comes to build a new deck on your home, you may wonder which construction materials are the best choice for your particular location. Before making your final decision, consider the following information:

Wood: The Traditional Favorite

For many years, wood has been used to build outdoor structures such as decks, gazebos, pergolas, and screen porches. People like the natural look of wood, and it’s easily cut, shaped, and installed into any shape you can imagine. Wood is also a lot cheaper than composite decking boards. However, buying the most inexpensive wood for a deck isn’t always the best solution. Purchase the highest quality wood you can afford for a long-lasting deck.

Wood is a softer material than composite decking and can become damaged by weather, falling objects, and other accidents. Wood needs to be sealed and stained every few years to retain its color and prevent bleaching from exposure to UV rays in the sunlight.

Certain types of wood cost more than others; for example, cedar is more expensive than pine. However, cedar is more durable than pine, lasts longer, and has a beautiful reddish color that looks very attractive. A deck made of any type of wood will need regular maintenance and sealing.

Composite Decking

Because composite decking isn’t made from natural materials, it’s naturally defect-free. There are no knotholes, there is no insect damage, splintering, twisting or warping, and the color is completely uniform throughout the boards. Composite decking doesn’t need any sanding, staining or sealing and is virtually maintenance-free. However, algae growth can temporarily turn the boards dark if the deck is located in a very shady spot with plenty of moisture.

Composite decking complements the look of vinyl molding around patio doors, windows, and doors and can create a uniform look for your home that’s rot free and insect resistant.
