2011 Energy Tax Credit Up To $500

Energy Tax Credit up to $500

As a result of the passing of the federal tax bill to extend tax cuts, there are new 2011 tax incentives to encourage homeowners to make energy efficient improvements to their homes. Replacing windows and doors with energy efficient Infinity products qualifies for this tax credit!

Eligible windows and exterior doors need to be Energy Star qualified products as per the attached 2010 program as shown on the following page. Infinity from Marvin products with either high performance LoDz-272® or LoĒ3‐366® glass qualify; in the Southern zone Lodz-366® glass must be used.

How to Qualify:

  1. Find Energy Star Qualification criteria for your zone at:
    www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=windows_doors.pr_anat_window
  2. Replace your old windows and doors with qualifying Infinity products any time in 2011. Energy Star certified products purchased from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2011 qualify for the tax credit.
  3. Consult Internal Revenue Service rules for additional forms and a complete description of the Tax Credit requirements. Check www.irs.gov for updated information.

Details of the Tax Credit:

  1. Homeowners can claim a credit of 10% up to $200 of the purchase price of qualifying windows, and 10% up to $500 for qualifying exterior doors. Installation of the windows and doors does not qualify for the tax credit.
  2. The tax credit is available for projects completed between January 1 and December 31, 2011 for a total of $500 over the one-year period.
  3. The credit applies to the homeowner’s principal residence only.
  4. There is a lifetime limit of $500 ($200 for windows) in total credits that a homeowner can claim from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2011. It is not on top of the $1,500 limit in 2009-2010. So if you have already reached or exceeded the $500 limit, you are no longer eligible to claim the credit in 2011. The $500 aggregate lifetime limit is for any combination of all tax credit qualifying products (HVAC, insulation, roofing, etc), not just windows and exterior doors. If you have claimed less than $500, you can claim the difference up to the $200 cap for the windows, and $500 for the exterior doors.
  5. A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction subtracted from your tax liability. Therefore, $500 can be subtracted directly from the amount of tax that is owed or added to a refund!
